Chandler's Gun Shop and Shooting Ranges: Concealed Carry Course

About Concealed Carry Course

Concealed Carry Course

Welcome to the "One Stop Shop" for your concealed handgun license....

If you are wanting to get your concealed handgun license, you've come to the right place!

For 1st time students, we have concealed handgun license packets available at our school (no need to contact the DPS and wait on your packet to arrive). Of course, if you already have your packet you are welcome to bring it along. For Renewals, students are responsible for contacting DPS to get their renewal information sent to them. The toll free number to contact DPS is 1-800-224-5744, or students can contact DPS online at www.txdps.state.tx.us for their renewal packet. However, renewal students are welcome to use our materials for the fingerprint cards, photo card holders, and notary forms if needed at the time of class, but the student still has to obtain their renewal info from DPS.

We take care of the fingerprints, notary seals, passport photos, and packet preparation. All of these services are INCLUDED FREE as part of your class. Students will need to bring a packed lunch on the day of class. There are cold drink machines available at the academy. We completion of the class, you will recieve a FREE 30 day range pass.

You're ready to learn, here's what you need to do and what you can expect.

Classes are very informal, so dress comfortably. Remember that part of the class involves a brief period of time on the gun range, so bring appropriate clothing for outdoor wear. On the day of class, please arrive 10 to 15 minutes prior to scheduled class time. You will be asked to fill out a brief information sheet that is used in preparation of your CHL packet.

During the classroom portion of the training, we will walk you through the DPS Concealed Handgun Manual which includes the various laws and regulations relating to the use of deadly force, concealed carry rules and regulations as well as dispute resolution. Also covered will be legal, moral and ethical ramifications of the use of deadly force. As presented in the manual, this material is very boring and somewhat confusing. Our style of instruction will help it all make sense as we bring the material to life for you in plain Central Texas English. We can't guarantee that you will pass, but we've never had a student fail yet. Since the range and classroom are at the same location, there is no travel time to the range, or any additional charges to use the range.

The "shooting" part of the class involves firing a total of 50 rounds of ammunition at a DPS approved silhouette target. You fire 20 rounds from 3 yards, another 20 rounds from 7 yards, and the final 10 rounds from 15 yards. It is a rare shooter who fails to pass the test; most folks have passed before they leave the 7 yard test line!

We strongly recommend that you qualify with a semi-automatic pistol; this will allow you to carry either a revolver or a semi-automatic. If you qualify with a revolver, that is all you will be legally able to carry concealed.

If your weapon malfunctions, you will have to rent a weapon from the gun shop. Gun rentals are $15, plus the cost of ammo (if needed). Our instructors will inspect weapons prior to the shooting qualification.

If you do not have experience operating a weapon, you will need to take the Beginner Handgun Lesson(s) prior to taking the CHL course. The CHL course is not the class to learn how to shoot. We have several classes during the year for this, but with enough notice, we can arrange a private class if necessary. Contact the Gun Shop for more details.
